Turning Potatoes into Gold

Hello I’m Sarah, the owner and mastermind behind the takeout window at Bob's Fresh Cut Fries

 

Something you should know about me is that I never wanted to work in a food truck. Like ever. It was a random occurrence that brought me into this business. When I was 17 my dad took me into Merrickville to hand out resumes. I needed a summer job and could picture myself behind the counter of one of the lovely air-conditioned shops in town. This was all sidetracked by my father who decided to stop at the chip wagon for a pogo. The owner saw my stack of resumes and shouted through the take out window “Is she honest!?….she can start tomorrow!” My heart sank.

 

It was hot. Extremely hot. Fast paced too. Always moving. It wasn’t long before I was addicted to the hustle. The tips were great and the cash paid under the table was even better. I was good too. Clean, organized and obsessive; all the marks of a good cook. I loved the atmosphere and the people. It wasn’t long before I got my best friend a job there too. 

 

When I was 22, I had finished my degree and graduated with honours to become a child counselor, taking a job in Calgary AB. A weekly call home to my dad changed everything when he said, “that chip wagon you used to work at is up for sale”. That was it. My bestie and I begged, borrowed and scraped to come up with the capital. We bought it before we even looked at it.

Where We Are Now

What Makes Bob's Fresh Cut Fries Unique

It’s been years since then… I bought out my business partner, purchased the land, upgraded the old “chippy” to a monstrous food truck with an amazing industrial kitchen. I have bakers on staff. I have sourced all of my meats and produce from local sustainable venders. I have even become the first food truck in Ontario to obtain a liquor license.

 

Our fish and chips made us known. Fresh east coast cod brought in by the case battered to order, crispy thin crust golden and flakey. Our sausages made 3 blocks away. Our hamburger ground fresh with local beef. Local beer, local ice cream, fresh St. Alberts cheese curds direct from the factory.

 

I love what I do and  we will never stop listening, growing and changing. I’m excited for the future of our beautiful historic village and all of the fun too…. but mostly the food.

We love Merrickville!

We have been a big part of the community and a local hub that has grown an amazing following. It has been a great source of joy for us over the years. We have fundraised for the MS society of Leeds Grenville, supported families effected by terminal illness, fed all of the Merrickville day nursery school annually for free, donated to the local fair and worked with habitat for humanity to send team members to other countries in need. We have given hundreds of gift cards for local raffles and fundraisers, donated to events in the village and fed people that couldn’t afford to eat.
